Bache-Martin receives a fitness grant from Reebok – April 2012

The Reebok sponsored “BOKS” before-school physical activity program is designed to jump start kids' brains and prepare them for a day of learning. The program combines play, physical activity, team games and short talks on nutrition to create healthier habits for children to achieve life-long fitness. BOKS runs two days a week and typically starts an hour before classes, allowing time for the program, breakfast and transition time.

Bache-Martin and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation partner for a Day of Service – April 2012
As part of our master planning initiative for our outdoor space, we made a huge step toward reclaiming the courtyard as the outdoor classroom/laboratory this it was originally intended to be. The project work included of a variety of tasks, but was highlighted by the installation of four raised beds, 2 compost bins, 4 rain water barrels and several student bird houses. Much thanks to Carolyne Diglard-Clark for bringing an army of volunteers, and to all the parents and neighbors who showed up to play in the dirt.

Bache-Martin partners with local Beauty Salons and raises $1,100 – March 2012
During the month of March, five salons/barbershops in Fairmount will be donating a portion of their proceeds to the Bache Martin to support music, art, recess and afterschool program supplies. Thanks to Beehive Hair Salon, Emerald Cutz, Shear Excellence, Sulimay’s, and Snip Philadelphia for their support. It takes a village!!

Bache-Martin hosts first annual Children’s Clothing swap – March 2012

Congrats to the fundraising committee for this great idea! On Mach 24, we opened our cafeteria doors for a children’s clothing swap (sizes for 10 and under). For $10 you could drop-off and take away as many clothes as you could carry. We plan to make this an annual event. Remember this when you are spring cleaning next year!

Keystone Mercy Health Plan donates $14,100 to support Playworks Recess and After-school Programs – January 2012
This year the Home and School was committed to raising $22,500 for PLAYWORKS. They have provided us with a full-time coach that oversees recess for grades K-7 and afterschool programs for middle grades including non-competitive soccer, volleyball and basketball. Through several parent based fundraisers (including Hot Cocoa sales at the Philly marathon – pictured at left) and a substantial donation of $14,100 from Keystone Mercy Health Plan we achieved our goal within the first few months of school!

We are proud to announce that the Bache-Martin Home & School Association was selected for the "2011 Neighborhood Improvement Award" for outstanding leadership and dedication to the Fairmount Community. The award was presented at the annual Fairmount Fling on November 17.

Bache-Martin Home & School Association in collaboration with the Fairmount CDC received a grant for master planning services for our outdoor spaces through the Community Design Collaborative. October 2011 marked our official unveiling of our "green" plan to parents, friends and neighbors. We will soon have a dedicated page for this initiative and will begin fundraising to implement the phases of the plan starting in Spring 2012.

Principal Duperon and celebrity chef Marc Vetri joined our 2nd annual Fall Festival as baking contest judges. Once again, our community group "Neighbors for Bache-Martin" did a fabulous job hosting the event. Thanks to Fairmount Art Center, ZoomDance, All Around the World Music, Martial Posture, and Friends of Eastern State Penitentiary Park for helping make this a wonderful annual event for local children.
