Welcome to our new faculty and staff for 2017-2018!

We are excited to welcome nine new members to the school's faculty and staff in the upcoming year!

Danielle Merrit, Assitant Principal

Danielle Merritt began her education career in the School District of Philadelphia in 2003 as a second grade teacher at Overbrook Educational Center. Dr. Merritt spent nine amazing years as a second grade teacher where she grew as an educator and began her journey in educational leadership. In October of 2012 Dr. Merritt was appointed as Dean of Instructional Programs and Student Affairs at Overbrook Educational, a capacity in which she served for five years before joining the team at Bache-Martin.

Dr. Merritt proudly boasts being a "Philly Girl", as she was born, raised and resides in West Philadelphia. She is also the proud product of The School District of Philadelphia, graduating from Samuel Gompers Elementary School, Dimner Beeber Middle School,
and Engineering & Science High School. Dr. Merritt obtained both her Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and her Masters degree in Elementary Education from Saint Joseph's University. She completed her undergraduate work at The Pennsylvania State University earning a B.S. in Administration of Justice with a minor in Psychology.

Dr. Merritt's educational experiences have afforded her the opportunity to work in various leadership capacities and with a diverse group of students and fellow educators.

Dr. Merritt's uncompromising belief is that it takes a village with a positive learning environment, strong and knowledgeable leadership, great community partners and supportive partnerships with families to enrich the academic and social experiences and success of all students.

During her free time, Dr. Merritt enjoys shopping, dining out, traveling, reading, walking her dog, MoJo and spending time with family and friends.

Gretchen Stewart, Principal Fellow

Gretchen Stewart was born and raised in Maine and received her undergraduate degree from Connecticut College.

Gretchen began her career in education as a Teach for America corps member in the San Francisco Bay Area. She taught 2nd-4th grades for several years before transitioning to Partners in School Innovation, a nonprofit that supports school leaders and teachers to implement best practices and build a continuous improvement mindset.

After nine years at Partners, Gretchen was selected to join Philly PLUS, a two-year principal certification program for accomplished educators. As a participant in this program, Gretchen will serve as the Principal Fellow at Bache-Martin this year, with a special focus on developing instructional leadership and management.

When Gretchen is not at school, she enjoys travelling, experimenting with new recipes, and spending time with her family.

Emily Sharon - 3rd Grade

Michael Hennigan - 4th Grade

This will be my fourth year teaching.  I taught third grade for the last three years in a district outside of Reading, Pennsylvania.  I am thrilled to be at Bache-Martin for my first year living and teaching in Philadelphia! This will also be my first year in fourth grade which is very exciting!  I have a strong understanding of the fundamentals and skills taught in third grade which will help me build-on the standards and skills taught in fourth grade.

I love traveling to different places inside and outside of the United States.  I enjoy football, baseball and hockey, as well as many other sports.  I enjoy running, being outside, hiking, camping, fishing, reading and spending time with family and friends. I LOVE to have fun and learn at the same time!

Daniel Granger - 5th Grade

I began my teaching career in the School District of Philadelphia 17 years ago in the year 2000. During the last 10 years, I’ve taught 3rdGrade in South Philadelphia at Stephen Girard Elementary School. This will be my first year at Bache Martin and I am excited to join the staff and contribute to the Fairmount community. I received my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh in Criminal Justice and Legal Studies. I also attended Saint Joseph’s University where I received a Masters Degree in Elementary Education in 2004. I enjoy working with youths and empowering their young minds to reach higher and dig deeper, thus the reason I find myself in a career that facilitates these ideals.

Outside of the classroom, you’ll find me still teaching and shaping lives. I am currently a 4th Degree Black Belt Tae Kwon Do Instructor. I teach Martial Arts 4 days a week afterschool for students in grades K-4 , in the Point Breeze section of Philadelphia. I am a father of three, two boys 10 and 15, and a girl 10. I currently live in Delaware County, Pennsylvania and will be a newlywed (April 2018). So, a lot of great things going on at the same time and adding Bache Martin was a welcomed addition.

Gabriana Nisiotis - 7/8th Math

I am a new teacher at Bache-Martin! I am very excited to have an opportunity to teach in the District of Philadelphia but more importantly in Fairmount. I was captured by the art, culture and community of Fairmount and I look forward to becoming more involved.

My favorite thing about my job is being able to celebrate students' successes. My goal is to inspire students to find their fire and help create a pathway to achieve all of their goals.

In my free time I enjoy running on the River Trail, eating my way through Philly, and watching any sport that is in season! I grew up in Allentown, PA and have been coaching field hockey for 10 years.
